High demand for Southern Fried Festival tickets

July 14th, 2011

Organisers of Perth’s popular Southern Fried Festival are urging music lovers to snap up tickets as soon as they can as gigs are selling out fast.

Every year, the Southern Fried Festival in Perth Concert Hall, Perth TheatreHorse Cross and other venues, gathers together a top quality collection of international and UK musicians to celebrate the best in American Roots Music.

And the fourth annual Southern Fried Festival which takes place over the weekend of 22 to 24 July is no exception with Lyle Lovett leading a line up which also includes the legendary Stax band, Blind Boys of Alabama, Iris Dement, Justin Townes Earle, former Mavericks front man Raul Malo and more, plus free workshops, smaller gigs and singalongs as well as the legendary Southern Fried soul food.

Saturday night’s Late and Southern Fried gig in Perth Theatre with Raul Malo and the Savoy Family Cajun Band is sold out as is the Iris Dement and Dean Owens concert in Perth Theatre on Saturday afternoon.  There are just a handful of tickets left for Friday’s Late and Southern Fried with Justin Townes Earle and Abigail Washburn.

Fans of the rarely seen Iris Dement still have the opportunity to see her perform when she supports Blind Boys of Alabama in the opening gig of the festival Friday 22 July in Perth Concert Hall as some tickets remain for this.  Balcony tickets can still be had for Lyle Lovett and his Acoustic Group in Perth Concert Hall on Saturday night and there are still tickets for Stax and Phantom Limb in Perth Concert Hall on Sunday 24 July.

There is still availability for some of the smaller gigs taking place over the weekend as well as the workshops and open mic.  As usual, Sunday’s Western Swing Brunch in Perth Theatre Redrooms is full to bursting, but Southern Fried food lovers can enjoy their favourite soul food in Perth Concert Hall throughout the weekend whether they are attending festival events or not.

Festival director Andy Shearer said:

“We’ve got a real diverse line up this year which I think appeals just as much to general music fans as to true Americana lovers.  I mean, who hasn’t heard of Dock of the Bay, In the Midnight Hour and Knock On Wood co-written by members of Stax?  Raul Malo is very well known from his time with the Mavericks and with four Grammy Awards, fourteen albums and four million records to his name, Lyle Lovett is an Americana legend with a hugely mainstream appeal.  It’s shaping up to be an amazing weekend!”

Media interest in the Southern Fried Festival has also been high with Blind Boys of Alabama appearing on STV’s The Hour on Friday 22 July, soul food specialist Peggy Brunache being interviewed on BBC Radio Scotland’s Kitchen Cafe on 20 July, plus a stack of other radio shows and print media all singing the praises of Southern Fried!
