FCAC launches its ‘Pop Up Shop’ in St. Andrews
June 29th, 2011
Fife Contemporary Art & Craft is trialling a pop-up shop called Treat in St. Andrews at the height of the summer season from 1-16 July. Located on the first floor of iconic St Andrews shop J&G Innes Ltd., 107 South Street, this temporary showcase features designer makers from Fife and beyond. It will give visitors the opportunity to see and treat themselves to the highest quality art and craft items which usually have to be sought out at exhibitions and other special events.
The pieces in the shop will range from original artists’ prints to ceramics, glass, exquisite pieces of jewellery as well as fashion and home accessories. Prices will vary so that everyone can afford to own something on show. The concept for the venture came about through FCA&C’s work to support and promote contemporary artists and designer makers. FCA&C’s Director, Diana Sykes said, “It is important to showcase the excellent talent we have locally in Fife and throughout the country and if successful FCA&C intend to expand the idea into the rest of Fife in future years”.
Jeweller Jane Gowans will be in charge of the shop and available with a changing team of exhibitors and FCA&C staff to give information and advice to customers. Pictures of featured artists and information about their work will be on display to enhance the shopping experience and give an insight into what makes this kind of work special. Demonstrations will also be organised to show designed makers in action.
Among the many Fife based contributors are Butter Wynd Pottery who use local clay, Evie Milo whose interest in sustainability results in a wealth of upcycled products, Jeanette Sendler’s original textile accessories and Claire Heminsley’s quirky tea towels. Prints from DCA’s Print Studio will be complemented by further artists including their Fife members Lisa Gribbon and Elizabeth Shepherd. Jewellery ranges from Lovely Pigeon’s very affordable pieces to Jane Gowan’s precious metal work. Glass comes from further afield with elegant vessels by Dumfries & Galloway’s Amanda Simmons and James Carcass’s chunky bubble filled work all the way from Hungary. Unusual paper lamps come from Hannah Nunn in Yorkshire.
