Double bill production redefines concepts of dance and disability
April 5th, 2011
Aberdeen audiences are in for a springtime treat when award-winning dancer/choreographer Claire Cunningham performs her highly-acclaimed double bill ME (Mobile/Evolution) at Aberdeen’s Lemon Tree on Saturday, May 7 before heading to the Sibiu International Theatre Festival in Romania.
She is the only known female dancer and choreographer on crutches in the world and her exceptional technique, impressive power and charmingly direct Scottish humour leaves no room for argument, redefining concepts of dance and disability.
Presented by RW International Arts and written and performed by Claire Cunningham, in association with Jess Curtis/Gravity, the tour of ME (Mobile/Evolution) is generously funded by Creative Scotland.
ME (Mobile/Evolution) was first produced as a double bill for the Dancebase season at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2009, where it was both a popular and critical hit and was awarded a prestigious Herald Angel Award.
It also toured across Europe last summer, including performances in Italy, Germany, Poland and Ireland and, again, to huge critical and popular acclaim.
A biographical and humorous double bill that challenges audience’s ideas of aesthetic, the performance showcases her exceptional dance technique and impressive power, woven from humorous stories about doctors and dancing, bikes and ballet, all threaded together and balanced upon, hanging from, spinning on, and swinging on, crutches.
Any possible sentimentality is undercut with a healthy dose of Scottish sarcasm.
“Before your eyes, Mobile transforms something utilitarian into a thing of beauty. It is a quietly effective piece that makes you look at difference differently.” THE GUARDIAN
‘feisty, innovative, radical and witty … this is strong visionary work…. It’s hugely, generously entertaining too … full of joy, optimism and sassy spirit” ***** THE HERALD
“one of the most joyous and moving things I’ve ever seen”
**** THE SCOTSMAN
