April 28th, 2011
At Dundee Rep Theatre Monday 23 May – Saturday 11 June at 7.30pm Matinees: Thursday 2, Saturday 4 & 11 June at 2.30pm
The award winning Dundee Rep Ensemble presents Anna Karenina, adapted by Jo Clifford and directed by associate director Jemima Levick. Dundee Rep brings you a timeless play from a company who has gained a longstanding reputation for quality and excellence.
Set against a background of changing times this epic tale of sex, duty and marriage is still as powerful and current today as it was when first published in 1873. Dundee Rep Ensemble member Emily Winter plays Anna, a woman torn between her highly respected civil servant husband Karenin (John Buick) and her illicit lover Alexis Vronsky (Tony McGeever). In contrast Ensemble member Kevin Lennon plays Constantin Levin, a simple and honest man who turns his back on city life to embrace the country, and an alternative life on his estate. In an age when social standing and reputation are high priorities, divorce is rare and affairs of the heart can end in tragedy.
Anna Karenina is the last ensemble production of the spring season and sees Ann Louise Ross back with the company after touring with Dundee Rep’s hugely successful production Sunshine on Leith and Age of Arousal produced by Steller Quines and the Royal Lyceum.
Ensemble apprentice Helen Darbyshire (Katy) plays alongside Irene Macdougall (Darya) and Robert Paterson (Oblonsky) in this love story of epic proportions.
Jemima Levick works again with designer Alex Lowde (Dolls House, Sleeping Beauty), Chris Davey (Sleeping Beauty, Firebird), and music by Aly Macrae (Sleeping Beauty) brings this timeless story dramatically to life.
