Two new exhibitions to be staged in Aberdeen with dramatic flourish

March 25th, 2011

Aberdeen Performing Arts are set to pull off a remarkable artistic double next week – but not on any of the stages in their three city venues.

For the arts company is set to launch two unique art exhibitions – the first on Monday in the Dress Circle Bar at His Majesty’s Theatre and the second on Wednesday in The Lemon Tree Lounge with a live performance of the beautiful music created by Fiona Soe Paing.

The HMT exhibition is a display of work by Aberdeenshire landscape and wildlife photographer David Officer.

Having graduated in 2006 with an HND in Professional Photography, he spent over a year working in studio portraiture before returning to his main love of nature photography and searching through woodland and hills to secure beasties, birds and beautiful sunsets on film.

He has captured the heart and character of the land and those that make it their home, from sea eagles to squirrels and mountains to lighthouses.

David first exhibited as part of North East Open Studios 2010 and is now on the steering committee for NEOS 2011. He works at Woodend Barn and lives in Peterculter with his Wife Heather and Westie Daisy.

His exhibition at His Majesty’s will be formally launched on Monday night and open to the public when there is a performance at the theatre or by request.

Audio/Visuals at The Lemon Tree is a collaborative exhibition of artworks by a variety of local artists in response to the beautiful music created by Fiona Soe Paing.

Brought up in rural Aberdeenshire with a Scottish mother and a Burmese father, her mixed heritage and the loss of her Burmese roots with her father’s death inspired her journey into an exploration of identity, belonging and separation, with music and voice as the vehicle.

Using other-worldly electronic instrumentation, and singing in Burmese, English and an invented language, the final destination she has reached is No Man’s Land.

Her work has been described as stylish, elegant and sinister . . . obscure electronica, minimal beats and exotic voice merging seamlessly with animated visuals to evolve into a multi-media artwork.

As part of The Lemon Tree project, Fiona played her music in a workshop of local artists, who created and evolved artworks in response.

At the preview of the Audio/Visuals exhibition on Wednesday, Fiona Soe Paing is going to perform live at 6pm with a projection of the visuals that have originally been created for the performance by Zennor Alexander and the beautiful artworks which have been created in response to her music.

Artists exhibiting include Heather Wilson, Rebecca Westguard, Lisa Gribbon, Lorraine Taylor, Kelly-Anne Cairns, Morag Smith, Mandy Clarke, Alison Watson, Kelly McMeekin and Diane Tulloch.

Admission is free, to both the 5.30pm preview and the exhibition which is open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 4pm and during Lemon Tree performances, until Sunday, May 29.

Audio/Visuals is part of the Art @ The Lemon Tree series, a partnership project between Aberdeen City Council’s Arts Development Team and Aberdeen Performing Arts.

The partnership is keen to showcase local artists and anyone interested in exhibiting or joining the mailing list for upcoming exhibitions should contact artatthelemontree@aberdeencity.gov.uk
