March 30th, 2011
Musicals are a hugely popular attraction at His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen which has seen productions of such blockbusters as The Sound of Music, Chess, Jekyll & Hyde and Footloose not to mention the upcoming shows Hairspray, We Will Rock You and Dirty Dancing.
And now Aberdeen Performing Arts (APA) is going to give local singers and even those who have never sung before a chance to get in on the act for themselves.
For APA’s creative learning section are staging two blocks of singing workshops for adults, centred around musicals.
The two courses will be led by creative learning worker and experienced vocal coach Paul Hudson from My Voice One Voice, Aberdeen who is also a singing lecturer at The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in the Music Theatre Department.
The restructured APA Studio Singers sessions are open to all levels of experience, age and ability, link into the programme at HMT and offer the opportunity for the singers to focus on different vocal techniques.
The first block, which runs on Tuesdays, 7.30pm to 9.30pm for eight weeks from May 3 to June 21, is a short course in the music and format of Rock and Pop Musicals.
The second block explores the world of musicals that began life as films from The Adams Family to Legally Blonde and Shrek.
This will also run on Tuesdays from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, for eight weeks from October 4 to November 22.
For both blocks, numbers are limited to 30, no previous singing experience is needed, and they cost £20 (£15 concession) for the course.
Places need to be booked, on a first-come-first-served basis, through Aberdeen Box Office on 01224 641122, online at www.boxofficeaberdeen.com, or in person at the Music Hall or His Majesty’s Theatre and further information is available from Paul on paul.hudson@aberdeenperformingarts.com or by calling 01224 337658.
